Ken Wilson (22.51.29): any idea why i would lose my internet connection if i enable static ip?
Me (22.53.04): well, there is a bug i've seen related to that

Email I got today:
From: Subject: Subject for default E-Mails goes here. EDIT ME! Dear Sir or Madam, please edit this email text now useless you want to send crap to your customers. With Best Regards
This confirms my suspicion that spammers goals are first to annoy you, and only second to try and get something valuable from you.

If you’re using Firefox 3, be sure to read this description of the AwesomeBar by a Mozilla employee. It certainly is awesome and has more or less replaced manually entering URLs with keywords (e.g. I type “gmail” rather than “mail.google.com”).
If you’re not using Firefox 3 yet, I suggest you try it. Release Candidate 1 will be out probably this week and...

Irony of ironies
FastPapers.com*, terrible that it is, features academic papers-for-sale on all topics, including the ethics of plagiarism. Sheesh.
Meanwhile, I’m working hard on a team paper for my class, participating in an academic dialogue about the pitfalls of plagiarism in the age of the internet.

The truth about blogging
[Ken’s sitting behind me while I go a’tumblin’.]
Me: You’re watching me blog. It’s making me a little uncomfortable. I’m trying to think of how to word this stuff…. Ken: Yeah, that can be a little uncomfortable. It’s like watching another dude masturbate.
[Apparently this conclusion has been drawn before….]
Remember the Milk: Now available on BlackBerry
I’ve been meaning to post about Remember the Milk for a while, which is one of the few web sites/services for which I’ll pay. (Flickr and Last.fm are the others.) It is a fantastic task management website.
And like the best web sites, you can interact with them wherever you are, even when not on their site. Remember the Milk has had some notable offerings to this end: Gmail...
Speeding: Is it worth it?
The words “speeding ticket frenzy” should have been enough to tip me off, but it was a quick check on Snopes to find that, indeed, PA cops are not on a rampage to catch any and all speeders.
But I’ve been thinking lately: is speeding even worth it? Yeah, sure, I can get away with going 70 or more on 76, but what does that gain me? My commute is easily the most stressful part of...

“ELLEN goes ahead with her pregnancy and the movie SAVED plays out with fewer jokes and more pretentiousness.” This parody kinda sums up what slightly unsettled me about this movie. (For the record: I did like it, just not as gushingly so as others.)
What is the world coming to?

It’s about time I say something about this site, and about Mark Shead. Ken recommended the site to me a while ago, after we’d gotten tired of Lifehacker and others losing their way.
It’s a great site about productivity and applying it to your life—personally, financially, technologically. It doesn’t update too often (which was one of Lifehacker’s problems) and the...
"Such A Strange Meme" indeed! →
What I don’t get is why this has been going around so long: what terminal commands I use isn’t really a good indicator of what I’m doing at my computer, and everyone pretty much has the same basic results.
Why is this interesting?

Sigur Rós - ( )
This is a truly great album and signifies why I love Sigur Rós. This is an album—not just a collection of songs but a complete work meant to be experienced entirely. Throughout it plumbs the heights and depths of the human spirit and is fantastic (if you have ears receptive enough to seehear past the idiosyncratic singing).

Doesn’t cover the irrevecocable redemptive quality of humanity (my big draw to the show), but is an interesting reflection on some of the gender issues the writers implictly cover.
